"It's almost a sin what we're doing to our children. In my 30-some years of teaching, I have not met a child who couldn't read when we go to the basics and teach him his alphabet then teach him his sounds. I haven't met one yet. Maybe there is one out there on this planet, but I don't believe there is."

--Phonics tutor Sylvia Brown, a former public school speech
pathologist, assistant principal, and principal in Tulsa

This page is designed to assist parents whose children are having difficulty learning to read.

To find out how well your child can read right now, take the First Reading Test.

Also check out the answers to some commonly asked questions about reading instruction.

Click here to read about a Tulsa boy who was convinced he was a dummy because he could not read. (Fortunately, he received phonics tutoring and is now on the honor roll!)

And if you have time to read just one book on the subject, we recommend the classic Why Johnny Can't Read.

Now that you're equipped with information, it's time to put your child on the road to reading. You have several options.

If your child is in a public school and is not learning to read, you must ask the school to give your child a firm foundation in phonics (click here and scroll down to the last two questions). Here are some phonics products your school should consider.

In addition, your child may be eligible for free tutoring and other supplemental services. Even if you’re not eligible for free tutoring, there are other private tutors, like Sylvia Brown in Tulsa, who can teach your child to read.

Another option is to seek out a private school, though you'll want to make sure it's one that will give your child a firm foundation in phonics.

Or, you can do it yourself. There are many phonics products you can use to teach your child to read. It may turn out to be the most fulfilling thing you'll ever do.
